Our Gardens, Spring 2010 issue no. 46,

This year the GCA celebrates 60 years of ‘Friendship through Gardens’. To commemorate the Diamond Anniversary, the journal has a double page spread recording all presidents from founder Margaret Davis to the present day, dates and places of the biennial conventions and photos of tree plantings at a number of those conventions.

The cover of the spring issue of Our Gardens is the beautiful garden The Braes at Leura, NSW. The style of the garden, incorporating dry-stone walls, is strongly influenced by the ideas of the renowned Paul Sorensen. This outstanding garden is open during the Leura Garden Festival in October. Another cool-climate garden is Hawthorn,Mount Wilson, NSW, designed along the classical park style and featuring magnificent trees, beautiful views and other features.

At Tilba Tilba NSW, Sue and Peter Southam have created Foxglove Spires. This is a ramblinggarden, lovely in all seasons with arbours and arches, roses and climbers and a faux ruin surrounded by water features.

For armchair and other travellers, member Jan Flanigan describes her visit to Monet’s garden in Giverny, north of Paris and explains why she felt she was visiting a living painting.

Two collectors of unusual plants share their interest: Lesley Crowden, a frequent Tasmanian contributor, tells of her obsession with and experience in growing the beautiful bulb, Fritillaria meleagris, and Peta Trahar introduces a collection of different tawny plants for spring while David Maher gives seasonal tasks for spring gardens. Our web page covers his tips in greater detail.

Our featured Botanic Garden is at Mt Lofty, South Australia where visitors can experience many spring wildflowers through their guided tours as well as seeing other collections including the National Species Rose Collection.

There are articles on garden health, why we need lawns and reviews of new garden books for the most discerning gardener and, of course, Diary Dates with Shows and Spring Garden Festivals around the country and news from many of our 639 affiliated clubs.
